If you are looking for things to do in South Wales with kids, here is one that truly fills the day. Dan-yr-Ogof, The National Showcaves Centre for Wales - three showcaves, over 250 life-sized dinosaurs, Shire horses, a farm and playgrounds, all on one ticket.
There is enough there to keep everyone busy with a great mix of outdoors and under cover, so the day holds up whatever the weather!
The 3 showcaves are definitely the highlight – Dan-yr-Ogof holds stunning cave formations hidden within the mysterious twisting, winding passageways inside the heart of the mountain; Cathedral Cave takes your breath away as you enter the magnificent Dome of St. Paul’s with 20 metre-high waterfalls cascading down beside you; Bone Cave shares its history spanning thousands of years, and hints at a secret still yet to be solved… All three caves are self-guided, so once you’re inside you can take your time.
Above ground, over 250 life-sized dinosaurs are set into the hillside, looming up through the greenery as you explore the trail. Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus, and Triceratops and hundreds of others are all waiting for you! You’re sure to find some favourites around the next corner!
The Shire Horse Centre is a lovely change of pace: these gentle giants are the stars of the show, and most children need persuading when it’s time to go home! Mr Morgan’s Victorian Farm sits alongside, with goats and Shetland ponies to meet, and alpacas and llamas grazing in the fields.
For when the kids need to burn off some energy, Barney Owl’s Playground has two areas, both undercover - a Jurassic Karting Track and an Adventure Playground - not forgetting the themed mini-golf and the outdoor play area, too. Something to do, whatever the weather!
The kids love the farm animals, playgrounds and dinosaur trail, and the caves genuinely tick the box for every age, adults and children alike. There’s gold panning, an Iron Age Village, and a little Fossil House to discover, too.
Children aged 2 and under go free, it’s all on one ticket, and there’s no charge for parking!
Dan-yr-Ogof is under an hour from both Swansea and Cardiff, and you will want the best part of a day to see it all.
