Three caves. Over 250 life-sized dinosaur models. Shire horses. A farm, indoor and outdoor playgrounds, a museum, and a coffee shop for when you’ve earned a five-minute break!
All of it tucked into the stunning scenery of the Brecon Beacons, where the drive in is already worth it. Dan-yr-Ogof, the National Showcaves Centre for Wales reveals something new every time you turn a corner.
If you are looking for things to do in South Wales that can fill the day, you have found one.
Below the stunning mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park lie three incredible caves, each with their own story to tell.
Dan-yr-Ogof is the longest, with twisting, winding passageways carved through 315 million year-old limestone. Here you will discover beautiful natural cave formations that have been ‘growing’ over millennia. You’ll be amazed how far you walk into the mountainside.
Cathedral Cave is awe-inspiring, with magnificent chambers on a massive scale that you would not believe possible underground! With two 20-metre high waterfalls between which you can walk, this really is some of nature’s finest work…
Bone Cave is completely different from the other two caves. The cave is smaller and more intimate, packed with fascinating things to look at. What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in human intrigue – why were 42 people buried in this cave thousands of years of ago…?
All three caves are self-guided, allowing you to experience the visit in your own time.
The Dinosaur Park is one of the largest collections of life-sized dinosaur models in the world.
With over 250 of them woven into the hillside between palm trees and ferns and appearing through the greenery, the park feels almost prehistoric! Dare you walk past the ferocious T-Rex guarding the dinosaur trail…? Or turn the corner and come face-to-face with a full-sized Ankylosaurus? Further up, the valley opens out below you with dinosaurs disappearing into the treeline as far as you can see.
Dinosaurs are cool – it doesn’t matter how old you are!
The Shire Horse Centre is a welcome change of pace, and these gentle giants, the Shire horses, are the stars of the farm!
With Mr Morgan’s Farmyard sitting alongside it there are plenty of friendly farm animals to meet such as the pigs, sheep, goats and alpacas.
You can even see what farm life would have been like when the Morgan brothers farmed the land here at Dan-yr-Ogof over 100 years ago.
Barney Owl's Playgrounds include the Jurassic Karting Track for younger children, and the Adventure Playground for the older ones - perfect for those rainy days!
When the sun is shining, there is a 9-hole farm-themed mini golf course, and an outdoor play area. All included in the entry ticket!
Dan-yr-Ogof, the National Showcaves Centre for Wales is near Abercrave in the Upper Swansea Valley, set in the Brecon Beacons. Search for Dan-yr-Ogof Caves on your navigation app.
